spotlight radio 88.9 fm (School project)

What was the Problem: This was a semester-long project where a fictitious business called Global Communications Corporation (GCC) is creating a new radio station in the Vancouver market. GCC is one of Canada’s major media companies that focuses on publishing, television, and radio. We were given the task to design the branding for this radio station.

What was my Solution:  I proposed for the radio station to highlight the newest and latest within the Lower Mainland. Vancouver has been rapidly growing with new restaurants and an expanded selection of entertainment, culture, and music. It was about time that Global Communications Corporation brought a fresh way to highlight and show off the growth that the city has to offer. With Vancouver being diverse in cultures and ethnicities, it was important to bring in the influences of international radio stations to Vancouver. The station will embrace the connection people get from live performances, interviews, and covers. On the station, they feature the latest singers in town ranging from International singers to local indie bands. With all this in mind, the word ‘spotlight’ came to mind and how fitting it was as the radio station’s name. Spotlight will also focus not only on the music but also on the different lifestyles and cultures of Vancouver through guest speakers and engaging in open conversations with listeners. Spotlight’s primary listeners range from the ages 18-40 years old who are socially active both online and in-person. They are also early adopters of technology and being up to date with the latest and greatest but also supports local businesses.

The main deliverables I focused on for the project consisted of a logo, website, a B2B brochure, and advertising for the launch of the radio station. Vancity Buzz (now known as Daily Hive) was a very popular platform for posting the latest updates around the city. A lot of my friends and colleagues had frequented the site for news and updates, and the idea of creating a radio station that had that element was something that inspired me. Bouncing off this idea with my classmate led us to talk about how a lot of radio programs in various countries focused a lot on live-streaming radio stations. This got me thinking about how that could be incorporated into the radio platform in Vancouver. This would give the audience an option to not only listen through the radio but also be able to watch through the website.

What did I Learn: Organization is key. Although the overall outcome of this project is something I am proud of, it tested my organizational skills as this was one of my first semester-long projects. Being organized and managing my time allowed me to get it to where it got to. I learned that it’s better to do things earlier and give myself time to review feedback and refine the project instead of leaving it till the last minute and not doing my diligence to ensure the concept/idea is fully explored.
